Description
Title of the invention: WAGON ADAPTER FOR CONNECTING A WAGON BODY TO A BEARING Technical field of the invention The present invention relates to the field of bearing adapters for a wagon.
STATE OF THE PRIOR ART A wagon generally comprises a bogie frame provided with a pair of lateral frames on each side, having jaws opening downwards. A bearing adapter can be moved vertically inside the jaws and rests on a bearing mounted on a wagon axle carrying a wheel of said wagon. The bearing adapter thus constitutes a rigid connection between the bogie frame of the wagon and the bearing. Typically, a bearing for a wagon axle fits around a journal at the end of the wagon axle, where it is mounted between a support ring assembly and a ferrule.
However, the wagon adapter can move relative to the bearing. The load applied by the bogie frame through the adapter may not be well distributed over the bearing, in particular on the rolling elements when the bearing is of the rolling bearing type. This results in wear on the inside and outside surfaces of the wagon adapter as well as failure of the bearing.
In addition, the wagon adapter can come into contact with the support ring or the bearing end piece. This gives rise to unexpected wear of these parts and thus reduces their useful life.
The movement of the wagon relative to the bearing can also lead to direct contact between the adapter and one of the seals of the bearing. In this case, the bearing is not properly sealed. Therefore, pollution by contaminating particles, dust and water can penetrate the interior of the bearing from the outside and potentially damage the parts of the bearing.
Typically, the bearings are filled with lubricant, in particular grease, to lubricate the rolling contact surfaces which support in rotation the axle of the wagon. The goal is to reduce friction and heat exchange so as to reduce wear on parts and the risk of breakage. However, bearing seals affected by movement of the car adapter can lead to a lubricant leak to the outside of the bearing, and then to a bearing failure.
These and other problems are solved by embodiments of the present invention.
Summary of the invention [0008] To this end, the invention relates to a wagon adapter intended to radially connect a wagon body to a bearing. The wagon adapter comprises an adapter body having two lateral channels each delimited by a pair of opposite ears and a lateral surface perpendicular to said opposite ears. The lateral channels are provided to cooperate with the wagon body. The adapter body further includes two front surfaces, an inner surface acting as a bearing seat for said bearing, and an outer surface. The wagon adapter also comprises two front flanges which project inwards with respect to the internal surface, and which delimit with the internal surface a housing for said bearing. The wagon adapter is further provided with an upper cover mounted on the external surface of the adapter body, said upper cover being designed to be in direct radial contact with the wagon body. The upper cover is provided with at least one recess receiving a pin projecting radially outwards provided on said external surface of the adapter body.

Brief description of the figures Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will appear on examining the detailed description of nonlimiting embodiments and the appended drawings in which:
[Fig.l] is a perspective view of a wagon axle provided with a wagon adapter according to a first embodiment of the invention;
[Fig.2] is an axial cross section of the wagon axle of Figure 1;
[Fig.3] and [Fig 4] are exploded perspective views of a wagon adapter for a wagon axle according to a second embodiment of the invention; and [fig.5] is a detailed axial cross section of the wagon axle of Figures 3 and 4.
Detailed description of the invention If we refer to Figures 1 and 2, a wagon axle 10 is provided to connect the bogie frame of a wagon to the wheels (not shown). The wagon axle 10 comprises a shaft 12 (in dotted lines in FIG. 2), mounted for rotation about an axis of rotation X10 relative to a wagon adapter 14.
The wagon adapter 14 is fixed to the wagon bogie frame, the shaft 12 being fixed to the wheels.
A bearing 16 is provided radially between the wagon adapter 14 and the shaft 12. As illustrated in FIG. 2, the bearing 16 is of the rolling bearing type and includes an internal ring 18 mounted on the shaft 12 , an outer ring 20 mounted inside the wagon adapter 14 and two rows of rolling elements 22a, 22b, for example rollers, arranged between raceways provided on the inner and outer rings 18, 20 The internal ring 18 is for example made in two parts axially separated by an axial spacer 24. In this embodiment, the bearing 16 is a tapered roller bearing.
The bearing 16 is further provided with sealing means 26, 28 at the two axial ends. The sealing means 26, 28 close a radial space defined between the inner ring 18 and the outer ring 20. The rolling elements 22a, 22b are arranged in said sealed radial space.
The wagon adapter 14 is fixed to the outer ring 20 by its radially inner side or its side towards the bearing seat 30 and is mounted inside the bogie frame.
The shaft 12 includes a pin 12a and a dust cover having a cylindrical surface 12b whose diameter is greater than the diameter of the pin 12a. A concave leave 12c connects the cylindrical surface 12b to the pin 12a. The inner ring 18 of the bearing is mounted on the pin 12a.
As illustrated, the wagon axle 10 further comprises a support ring 34 having an internal surface 34a intended to come into contact radially with the external surface of the shaft 12, at the side of the leave 12c and for come into axial contact with the inner ring 18 of the bearing 16. Consequently, the inner surface 34a of the support ring 34 has a rounded shape, almost complementary to that of the fillet 12c.
The wagon axle 10 also includes a tip assembly 38. The tip assembly 38 includes the tip 38a intended to constitute a stop element in the case of a translation to the left (relative in FIG. 2) of the shaft 12 with respect to the internal ring 18. Consequently, the end piece 38a is reliably fixed to the pin 12 by means of three end screws 38b and comes into axial contact with the ring internal 18 of bearing 16.
As illustrated in detail in Figure 1, the wagon adapter 14 comprises an adapter body 40 provided with two lateral channels 42. In Figure 1, only one channel 42 is illustrated, the adapter body 40 comprising another lateral channel on the opposite lateral side. Each of the lateral channels 42 is delimited axially by a pair of opposite ears 42b, 42c and by a lateral surface 42a perpendicular to said ears. Each side channel 42 has a U-shape and is intended to engage an ear of a jaw (not shown) of the bogie frame so as to act as an insertion guide between the adapter and the frame. bogie.
The car body 40 also includes first and second front flanges 50, 52 oriented radially inward. The flanges 50, 52 project radially inwards relative to the internal surface 30. The flanges 50, 52 are axially opposite one another. The flanges 50, 52 define with the internal surface 30 a housing for the outer ring 20 of the bearing 16. The outer ring 20 is disposed axially between said flanges 50, 52.
The body 40 of the wagon adapter 14 further comprises two front surfaces 46, 48, the internal surface 30 acting as a bearing seat in radial contact with the outer ring 20 of the bearing 16, and an external surface 32.
The internal surface 30 has a concave shape of constant radius so as to rest on the external cylindrical surface of the external ring 20 of the bearing 16.
The adapter body 40 is made of metal by any suitable process such as for example by casting. For example, the body 40 is made of steel or cast iron.
The wagon adapter 14 is further provided with an upper cover 54 mounted on the outer surface 32 of the adapter body 40. The upper cover 54 has an outer surface 54a acting as a frame seat in contact direct radial with the bogie frame. The wagon adapter 14 is then mounted inside the bogie frame by the radially external side or by the side of the frame seat 54a of the upper cover 54.
The upper cover 54 can be fixed securely to the fixing plate, for example by screws (not shown).
According to the invention, the upper cover 54 is provided with a recess 54b receiving a pin 32a projecting radially outward and provided on the outer surface 32. The pin 32a allows to center the upper cover 54 relative to the adapter body 40.
The outer side of the upper cover 54 is provided with an upper central groove 55 extending along an axis parallel to the axis of rotation X10 of the bearing 16. The recess 54b is advantageously provided inside of said upper groove 55. The upper central groove 55 is optional.
The upper cover 54 is made of metal by any suitable method, for example by casting. For example, the upper cover 54 is made of steel or cast iron. Alternatively, the top cover is made of plastic or polymeric material.
If we refer to an alternative embodiment of the invention (not shown), the upper cover 54 may be provided with two or more than two recesses each receiving a corresponding pin projecting outwards from the outer surface 32 of the adapter body 40. The recesses are advantageously provided inside the upper central groove 55 of the upper cover 54. The upper cover 54 is then prevented from rotating relative to the adapter body 40.
A second embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figures 3 to 5, the same elements having the same references, and it differs from the first embodiment only in that the upper covering and the adapter body pins are fixed to each other by a bayonet fixing.
The pin 32a comprises an external cylindrical surface 32c which adjusts with the cylindrical bore of the recess 54b of the upper cover 54. Said external cylindrical surface 32c is provided with two Z-shaped slots 32d. The slots are diametrically opposite and only one will be described in more detail. Each of the slots 32d includes a first vertical arm 32e, a second vertical arm 32g, and a horizontal arm 32f connecting the two arms 32e, 32g. The first vertical arm 32e opens outward and the second vertical arm 32g extends downward from the horizontal arm 32f.
The cylindrical bore of the recess 54b includes two pins projecting inward 54d, 54e. Pins 54d, 54e are diametrically opposite.
When mounting the upper cover 54 on the outer surface 32 of the adapter body 40, the recess 54b of the upper cover 54 is aligned with the pin 32a of the adapter body 40. The pins 54d, 54e of the upper cover 54 are also aligned with the opening of the first vertical arm 32e of the corresponding slot 32d. The upper cover 54 is then pushed down on the pin 32a. Once the pins 54d, 54e of the upper cover 54 reach the bottom of the arm 32e, and therefore the bottom of the horizontal arm 32f, the upper cover 54 is rotated so that the pins 54d, 54e slide along said horizontal arm up 'until they reach the lateral surface of the second vertical arm 32g. The upper cover 54 is then pushed downwards towards the external surface 32 of the adapter body 40 until the pins 54d, 54e reach the bottom of said arm 32g. The slots 32d have a dimension designed to guarantee vertical contact between the upper cover 54 and the external surface 32 of the adapter body 40 when the pins 54d, 54e come into contact with the bottom of the second vertical arm 32g of the slot 32d.
The pins 54d, 54e of the upper cover 54 are then coupled with the slots 32d of the adapter body 40 so as to prevent any relative movement between them.
In a variant not shown, the recess 54b of the upper cover 54 may comprise more than one pin, the pin 32a of the adapter body 40 comprising the corresponding slot. As an additional variant not shown, the pin 32a of the adapter 40 may include an outwardly projecting pin coupled to a slot provided in the recess of the upper cover.
It should be noted that the embodiments illustrated and described have been provided solely by way of indicative and non-limiting examples and that modifications, combinations and variants are possible within the scope of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated on the basis of a rolling bearing provided with at least one row of rolling elements arranged radially between the inner and outer rings. Alternatively, the bearing can be a plain bearing or a sliding bearing comprising one or two rings.
